Boss Lady, Even Off-Work

Who is a boss lady? A boss lady is one who juggles work, social life, her own private space, and looks good while at it. She is the real-life personification of the phenomenal woman Maya Angelou talks about. Strides in style, carries herself off with the utmost grace, and there is an astounding grace in her understatement.

Have you wondered how such a boss lady dresses for her when she’s off work? Her style doesn’t speak in loud colours, neither is it a replica of anyone’s pre-dictated fashion trends. She treads the roads with utmost confidence, turning heads all the way. One way to define her style statement would be to use a single piece of clothing and style it in multiple ways for different looks which singularly stand out for its own statement.

Layering is one technique to ace the sartorial genius of a style chameleon. Using one piece of clothing or a statement jewelry as the constant, other components are made to vary and compose distinctive looks which stand out on their own and are replicas of no other outfits ever seen before. I go bonkers with layering whenever I find the slightest opportunity to. Come summer, come winter layering gives life to my convivial yet self-assured self by teaming by favourite elements of clothing and/or accessories together.

I myself find myself juggling work, social work, and some me-time every day of the week. The weekend doesn’t present an opportunity for me to put off work or sit apart from my laptop. And as they (very rightfully say) you should dress your role while at it. Being a boss lady isn’t something you put on during the weekdays and throw it at the back of your wardrobe during the weekend. Your confidence doesn’t leave your side, why should your power dressing skills?
What one does need to ace while layering is the knowledge of fine balance. Keep the sur de lessus layering for occasions and festivities. Everyday functional fashion should let you breathe and move and take you from one room to another without looking like an odd-one-out. You can put one layer off, or throw another one on, the world is your playground.

When it comes to layering, nothing can surpass a solid shrug. There is no end to the number of trends you can cross off your fashion checklist if you decide to play around with the no. of pieces in your outfit. Let me show you how your solid shrug can take you from work to party in a jiffy, like a boss lady. Practical, chic, and explores the experimental side of you, en vogue.

I have paired my staple black bodycon dress for fall with a high neck with this cold shoulder waterfall shrug which adds amazing detail, poise, and style to the otherwise basic dress. When two basics come together, you can be sure that the outfit is going to be beyond ordinary. To complement the outfit, a pair of black heels are a must. Since this is the work outfit, I have avoided shoes in pop colours or with chunky heels and/or embellishments.

But you can’t possibly be wearing the same outfit to an evening party or a dinner, right? That’s why I have used the same shrug as a super-sexy front-open wrap top and paired it with a flattering pair of jeans. With a bold lip colour and eyes that spell ‘drama’, you are all set to turn into a dinner party showstopper. Add on a quirky, contemporary earring to dress it up subtly.

P.S. I have also changed into a pair of suede clog heels to add some edginess to the look.
